Coffee storage

Proper coffee storage makes a big difference in the taste of your coffee once you use it. Here are some tips for storing coffee beans and ground coffee so your coffee tastes the best possible.

To store roasted coffee beans, use an airtight ceramic container that blocks light. The ceramic container needs a rubber seal around the lid so that air cannot get in.

Fill the clear ceramic bowl to the top with coffee beans to keep the air inside to a minimum. Roasted coffee beans will last one to two weeks, when stored this way at room temperature.

Stay away from plastic or metal containers because they can alter the taste of your coffee. If you use a clear glass jar, keep light out by storing it in a dark closet.

The truth about ground coffee is that it will only store for a few days. But you should at least keep the air out by using an airtight ceramic container that blocks the light.

That’s why grinding your own beans is worth the effort, and it’s really simple too. Trying to keep your coffee grounds fresh is next to impossible.

You’ll even hear some people suggest freezing whole bean or ground coffee, but here’s why it’s a bad idea. Water molecules not only stick to coffee beans and ground coffee, but also to the packaging.

When water comes into contact with the surface of a coffee bean, ice forms around it. Roasted coffee beans are porous, so when ice melts, it deteriorates the taste and quality of the coffee.

So what about storing coffee in the refrigerator? Absolutely not. The constant cold mist in the refrigerator clings to coffee beans or ground and water is the enemy of coffee during coffee storage.

Storing coffee at room temperature works well for coffee that you will use within a week or two of purchase, if these items can be removed.

If you want to always have good coffee, buy coffee beans and grind it just before making a new pot. Buy only as much coffee as you can consume in a week or two.

Proper coffee storage will make your coffee taste the best possible.
