Does your cat have dandruff? Here are some things to know

Have you noticed that your cat seems to be developing a dandruff problem? Believe it or not, cats can suffer from dander just like people. It’s kind of funny when you think about it, but most of us would rather avoid cat flakes from spreading all over the carpet and furniture, especially when we already have to deal with all the hair they shed.

So why does a cat have dander? A common reason for this is if your cat is overweight. With all that extra fat getting in the way, poor Snowflake has a hard time cleaning herself everywhere, so her skin dries up and leads to dandruff. Obviously, the best way to fix this problem is to put your cat on a diet. Not only will the dandruff problem be solved, but your cat will be healthier and live a longer life.

Of course, this weight will not be lost immediately, so in the meantime you will have to deal with the problem of dandruff in another way. There are pet shampoos specifically aimed at dandruff, so buy one of these from your local pet store. You should always make sure to carefully rinse out the shampoo completely, as if anything remains, it could irritate your cat’s skin. Also, be sure not to bathe the cat too often because cat fur produces natural oils, and if you wash it constantly, it could irritate your cat’s skin and contribute to the problem of dandruff.

Tea tree oil is another way to help with dandruff. This is beneficial for a variety of skin conditions in addition to dandruff, and an added benefit is that it will eliminate any itchiness your cat may have.
