listening to books

My girlfriend once told me, “I don’t have time to read, so I buy audiobooks, I can put them in the car while I drive to and from work, and I find that pleasure in books without actually reading.” I was blown away at the time, firstly because I had never actively searched for an audiobook to listen to as well, but mostly because she was right. Working forty or more hours a week, who really has that time to sit back and relax or curl up in a comfortable easy chair to read a good book.

My next day off I researched the internet and found some wonderful audio literature online, books I had heard of but never had the chance to read. Now it was my time to discover this whole new world of audio literature.

A while ago there was this movie that I was missing in theaters, and to my surprise I was able to locate the audiobook online, I bought it, and when it came a couple of weeks later, I was listening to that audiobook. every commute, to and from work every day. Let me tell you, it was like being at the movies listening to that fictional book being read aloud to me. I enjoyed the experience so much that within a week I was back at my favorite online store to order more audiobooks.

My other option for audio literature is inspirational or motivational books that will help me focus on more positive aspects of life and not get bombarded by the negativity that our daily lives can generate.

Personally, I love fictional stories, I am attracted to them, since I can disconnect my brain from the reality of my daily life. Where sometimes I feel like a robot. You identify? Day after day I get up, iron the kids’ clothes for school, make everyone’s lunches, shower and get ready for the day, have breakfast, feed the dog, make sure the kids are ready for school and that homework and last-minute things are arranged and the children are dropped off at school. Then I commute forty-five minutes to work. Only to finish, usually eight hours later, driving home, cooking dinner, catching up with the family, watching some mind-numbing TV, and going to bed. Seven to eight hours later, if the kids don’t wake me up in the middle of the night, I get up and do it all over again. Are you sure this saga sounds familiar to you? Audiobooks have helped me unplug and enjoy a great novel without having time to physically sit somewhere (without interruptions) and enjoy a book.

I am so grateful to my friend for sharing her audio book adventures with me, now I am fully converted to enjoying a good book via audio.
