The art of processing emotions

Many of us spend hours regularly processing the emotions we experience in our lives. It is in the belief that if we reach a place of resolution with them we will be happier and / or we will be more present in our lives. Processing emotions is a skill that many find difficult to perform, especially if they were not taught as children to identify what they were feeling. Millions have a hard time processing their emotions so if you perceive that you fit into this category, don’t feel alone.

Processing emotions is both an intellectual skill and a bodily experience. We may be able to express the emotion, recall the memory related to the feeling, but we have no real connection to it in our body. What can make us feel disconnected from the experience itself and from our own body.

Being able to perceive emotions includes feeling the entire experience in our physical body. It is feeling where our body feels uncomfortable when we are upset and all our bodily reactions included. When we do this we teach ourselves to be more present in our body. The longer we live with this kind of awareness, the more intense anger feels, but so does joy and happiness. We begin the process of leaving life from confused emotions where we feel little and remain in a worldly expression of our feelings to a fuller range of ourselves.

One of the keys to getting out of worldly life is learning to feel the emotions of our past. What we have emotionally repressed is often one of the blocks that keeps us from feeling ourselves. If we can tap into those energetic memories on a bodily level, we can begin the process of releasing them forever. Our cognitive memory of these experiences only gives us the information from our mind that we have to address what our body has stored in order for them to actually work.

What I have discovered is that much of our anxieties, worries, anger, etc., always have their origin in our past. So when I experience the emotion, I stop, sit, and feel it. The first step is to locate where you feel distress in your body. If you can’t identify it in your body, ask your body awareness to come up so that you can feel it. Or simply ask your body, “Where is the sensation of this emotion located?”

Our bodies can do this. They are complex sensory organs that can give us massive amounts of information if we ask for it. It is important to know that the body wants us to discover these things because it will be much easier not to carry these full emotions.

When we are able to identify the location of the sensation of the emotion, sit down and be present with it. Position your awareness to perceive the full intensity of the experience of it. Observe alone, if we judge it, we re-traumatize the experience, for example, do not go into how bad it was. Even if a memory comes up, you just need to be present with it.

Once you feel that you are in touch with the full energetic memory of the experience, ask your body, “Is there a deeper source from where this emotion originated?” Observe if another sensation appears in your body, it may be in another place or even below where you have been working. Begin again the process of perceiving the full intensity of the energetic memory. Your presence with him will be the catalyst for his release.

When we release these experiences we will begin to feel a lightness in our body. It feels like energetic rocks are being removed from us, giving way to increased body awareness that is generally perceived as a lighter sensation. It is part of the process of knowing yourself fully.

As I delve into this process, I find that sometimes I need to cry to help grieve or hit or scream against the pillows to release my anger more fully. When I do this, I stay focused on the intensity of the energy in my body, I don’t put my attention on the person I’m angry with, like imagining their face on the pillow. It’s about identifying and releasing your own anger, not projecting it onto someone. An important distinction.

It is a wonderful freedom. We experience anger, sadness and happiness more fully from a more realistic perception.
