bedroom inspiration

Most of the time, the bedroom is the last room to be redecorated. I’m not sure why. It may be the room that has the least visibility for our guests, and we don’t feel pressure to keep it up to date. However, you spend a considerable amount of time in the bedroom and owe it to yourself to have a place where you can retreat that makes you feel relaxed and content.

Once you’re ready to loosen the bag strings and spend some well-deserved money on decor, all you’ll need is inspiration. Here are some timely ideas that are sure to stimulate your creative decorating juices.

Start with a neutral canvas of a soft, soothing color, such as cream, wheat, linen, or tan, and a similar shade of rug. Add color using fabrics and accessories. Don’t be afraid to use stripes or flowers for the curtains and add colorful accent pillows or side chairs.

Add a traditional sconce for lighting and additional smaller wall sconces.

Instead of decorating the wall above the bed with a large painting, try adding a decorative shelf with flowers or an interesting sculpture.

Another alternative to a single large image over the bed is a group or three smaller prints with similar themes.

Create a small area to sit or meditate with a lamp, small table, and chair.

Hang a flowing silk canopy from the ceiling.

For a sultry, romantic look, use deep orange or gold on the walls with a plum-colored bedspread or accessories. Accent with wrought iron curtain rods and candle holders.

Combine slate blue, navy blue and chocolate brown for a full and rich look.

Revitalize an old headboard by covering it in microfiber, suede, or leather.

If you’re using a neutral palette, add it with bold red and black cushions, chairs, or vases.

Decorate with a seasonal theme in mind. Warm yellows and sunflower evoke memories of summer. Small floral prints and fresh green and pastel accents bring spring to mind.

Hang the curtains near the ceiling and let them hang to the floor. Shades hung too close to the window frame make the ceiling appear lower and the entire room appear darker. A good rule of thumb for mounting curtain rods is to place them 6 inches to 1 foot above the window trim.

When you start decorating, start with an empty room, gradually adding furniture and accessories. Remember that less is more. A messy bedroom won’t calm your nerves when you retire for the night.
