Heavy duty plastic shelving is an excellent way to keep your stuff organized and out of the way. It’s also great for those situations where you just can’t afford a full-scale closet full of clothes or linens. These are also great if you need to store certain items, like a small library of books or something similar. The shelving itself usually comes in one piece and can either be constructed out of metal (which is more durable) or come in a more flexible plastic like the kind that hangs from your wall. Most units will have at least four legs, but some models can be three or even two-legged.
There are lots of different models out there; some are freestanding and some are vented. One of the advantages of a freestanding unit is the ease in which they can be moved around. Most models take up about two feet by two feet of space, so don’t feel like you’re getting too much storage space. Most units will have between four and eight shelves, depending on how much heavier you’re trying to keep things. Most heavy duty plastic shelving systems will hold up well under the weight of several books or DVDs, so don’t worry too much if your books or DVDs weigh a lot.
A popular model is the freestanding metal shelf. Metal shelves usually come in one or more pieces and they are very sturdy. Some models can be as high as five feet, though usually only come in two-foot height. These heavy duty plastic shelves usually come with either metal frames with hinges or with simple book holding mechanisms in place. They are great for anything from books to heavy duty plastic containers.

There are also models out there with two or more shelves on each side of a single long shelf. Usually, this model comes with hinges so you can open the bottom shelves and use them as an end table. If you have an empty corner in your garage, you might want to consider installing a heavy duty corner shelf. Shelves in the corner can be used to store just about anything you have on a shelf but the most important thing to consider is how many books or DVDs you have in your home. Usually, these shelves will accommodate up to twenty-four x forty-six books (not including CD’s), but it depends on how many boxes you have to store on each shelf.
Heavy duty plastic shelves can come in just about any finish and color. Most companies do not offer unfinished models, but if you do want a unique look, I highly suggest you get the finish you want. It really isn’t all that hard to install your own plastic storage shelves, but some people prefer to pay professionals so that they can customize their shelves and make them exactly what they want. Some people will even purchase the necessary hardware to hang the shelves themselves, which can be a very do-it-yourself type of project.
I have to say though, that I prefer to purchase heavy duty plastic shelving because it lasts longer. Because the material is typically plastic, there are less chances for your storage system to become damaged from normal use. If your unit does become damaged, you can easily replace the entire system without having to spend a lot of money on a brand new heavy duty plastic shelves. Also, if you are the type that does not want to replace the entire storage system, I highly suggest you look into the possibility of customizing your own plastic shelves. This can save you a lot of money, but also adds a personalized touch to your room.
