Politicians are a buzz on Twitter

If you are reading this blog, you may already be familiar with Twitter.

There’s a new buzz around, it’s called Twitter. Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows users to send and read each other’s updates, known as tweets. This service became popular among normal everyday users, but it plummeted among celebrities, even politicians. The service allows users to have followers who receive these updates instantly. These followers can also update their friends with these tweets, making tweeting all the fun.

But why would politicians enter Twitter?

In an age where voters aren’t interested in politics, any way to help the process can’t be too bad. Politicians in the United States of America everywhere are using Twitter to connect with their constituents. There is no way for voters to keep track of what representatives do while in office. However, Twitter opens the door for politicians to inform, entertain and connect with voters immediately. Clearly, users need to be very careful about the information they share on Twitter. There’s no way it’s cool for politicians to tweet private information that the public can’t see. Politicians can also use this tool to deliver news. If you’re a news junkie like me, I’m not always tuned in to CNN, MSNBC, NBC, FOX, etc. If you are in Jamaica, you may be listening to Nationwide, RJR or Power 106.

Here are some tips for politicians who decide to use Twitter:

1. Keep it simple

To help with this, tweets are limited to 140 characters, so keep it short and to the point, but with content.

2. Dedicate some tweets to Entertainment

Voters don’t expect you to be locked in Parliament/Senate/or ministerial duties 24/7. So let your followers know when you are relaxing or even at a social event. Politicians who can present both a hard-working image and one where you can kick back and have fun are always a plus for voters. Keep in mind that there aren’t too many tweets about fun!

3. Never share private information.

4. Be attractive

Answer the questions that are asked. See corresponds to sources for more information. This will show that you care.

5. Grow your fan base

That’s what assistants are for. Use personal assistants to grow and expand your popularity. In an era where connecting with the youth vote is imperative, this is a great tool for any politician seeking re-election.
