Youth Life: You CAN work for yourself!

When I was young, my parents told my siblings that they should work hard in school, try to get good grades, and that would lead to a good job! They would expect to hold that job for most of their lives and then retire with a reasonable pension. Tidy! (I, the daughter, was told to get any job until I found a man to marry and support!)

Well, that may have been the situation then (although I didn’t really believe it!), but in fact it turns out that it wasn’t the truth in the long run! In recent decades, more and more people have lost their jobs as labor markets and industries failed, unemployment rates reached high levels, people had to retrain, sometimes more than once, and now there doesn’t seem to be such a thing as a ‘safe job’.

You can add to that the fact that many people who have retired in the last decade have found that their company had squandered their promised pension and they were reliant on a measly state pension for income in what should have been their ‘happy retirement years’.

Now let’s fast forward to the situation of today’s young adults. I guess many of you heard, or keep hearing, the same stories, right? You may already:

o Pushing for grades (and that’s not all a bad thing) in the hope of getting a decent JOB in the end.

or have a JOB you go to every day, working for someone else, unable to do the things you want to do, working with people you wouldn’t choose to spend time with, and wondering if you’ll ever be able to jump off the treadmill! !

or have a hobby or interest that you would love to spend more time doing, even wishing you could somehow do it for a living, but believing it’s just a ‘dream’ to other people.

Well, YOU CAN LIVE YOUR DREAM – doing what YOU want to do!

It is absolutely clear that for most people, the old way of thinking only serves to funnel them down the same funnel as everyone around them. So DO NOT just take what the adults around you are saying without question. They (like me) grew up in a different era. What was HIS truth is not necessarily yours.

In fact, many young people are now taking matters into their own hands and finding more and more ways to work for themselves, doing what they love to do, and earning a much better living. Just look at the number of young millionaires out there today.

It just takes a little creativity and some knowledge, but with the right information and support, YOU can too.
