Steps to take to repair the windshield yourself

If your car windshield has a chip on it, you may want to get it repaired asap. If ignored, this little chip can expand and increase your chances of having a car windshield replacement done. Once the first layer of the windshield is cracked, the damage can spread. If you want to save money in the long run, we suggest that you get the glass repaired as soon as possible. You can do it yourself or get help from a professional. You can purchase windshield repair kits at a nearby auto parts store if you want to go the DIY route. Below are some of the tips that can help you do the repair yourself.

1. For DIY work, you need the following:

  • Shaving blades

  • Plastic curb tongue

  • Well fill

  • Repair resin

  • Injector and bridge

  • A mirror to place inside.

  • A Dremel tool

2. Start the repair process

First of all, you need to prepare the windshield for repair. You can use an alcohol pad to clean the area. Your next move is to hook the mirror onto the inside of the glass. It should be focused on the chip that needs to be repaired. This will help you control the shape from different aspects.

3. Seal the chip

You may want to center your desired tool on the chip. Basically, you need to seal the chipped area.

4: resin drop

Once you’ve sealed the chip, your next step is to drop a couple of drops of resin onto the injector area.

5: inject the chip

You can use the injector to insert the resin into the chip. Once you’re done, you may want to let it sit for at least 5 minutes. If your car is in direct sunlight, you may want to keep the area covered. This is important for the resin to cure properly. After 10 minutes, you can take off the bridge.

6: Fill the missing glass

Now, you are almost done with the repair. Your final move is to fill in the small holes in the chipped area. This is the area where you may find some glass is missing. For a smooth finish, following this step is of the utmost importance. You can use your pet filler for this purpose. Once you’ve filled in the area, you may want to wait a couple of minutes for it to fully heal.

7: Remove excess fill from well

You can use a razor blade to scrape off excess filling from pits. Apart from this, you can use nail polish to make sure the area starts to shine once more.

Simply put, you can follow these steps if you want to repair your car windshield yourself. However, if you have not done any type of windshield repair before, we suggest that you take your car to a professional. After all, you don’t want to end up causing more damage to your vehicle.
